چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim: Although the physical properties of modern glass ionomers have been extensively reported, few studies have examined how these parameters change with age. This experimental study aimed to investigate the effect of aging on the compressive strength of resin-reinforced glass ionomers. Material and Methods: Two glass ionomers (Fuji IX GP Fast, GC, Japan, and Ketac Universal, 3M, USA) and one composite resin (control; Filtek P60, 3M, USA) were chosen for this study. Both glass ionomers were encapsulated and mixed using an amalgamator and were applied using an appropriate applicator. Forty cylindrical (4×6 mm2) samples were made of each material and subsequently incubated at 37°C with 95±5% humidity. Twenty samples from each material were then randomly selected to undergo aging in a thermocycling machine using 1000 cycles (between 5-55°C). The compressive strength of the samples was then measured using a universal testing machine. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc Tuckey’s test were used for data analysis. Results: The aging process (thermocycling) caused a significant increase in the compressive strength of all three materials. Overall, Ketac Universal displayed higher compressive strength with an average value of 271.1120±15.4387 MPa and 248.6910±15.10716 MPa with and without aging, respectively, compared to Fuji IX GP and Filtek P60.     Conclusion: The aging process increases the compressive strength of glass ionomers and composites; however, even with aging, modern glass ionomers still struggle to achieve compressive strength values close to those feasible with composite resin. It is therefore essential to use these materials in non-stress-bearing areas.

Resin modified glass-ionomers: strength, cure depth and translucency.

BACKGROUND According to the classification suggested by McLean, Wilson and Nicholson only three materials, currently marketed, fit the designation of resin modified glass-ionomers. These materials will undergo an acid/base setting reaction but also contain a limited quantity of a monomer that will polymerize as a result of irradiation. The quantity of polymer is limited to the extent that it wi...

Fracture toughness, compressive strength and load-bearing capacity of short glass fibre-reinforced composite resin.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the reinforcing effect of short E-glass fibre fillers on fracture related mechanical properties of dental composite resin with a semi-interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) polymer matrix. METHODS Experimental short fibre composite (FC) resin was prepared by mixing 22.5 wt% of short E-glass fibres, 22.5 wt% of IPN-resin and 55 wt% of silane treated silica fillers usin...

Comparative evaluation of antibacterial effect and compressive strength of resin-modified glass-ionomer containing different antibiotics

Background and Aims: Nowadays, new techniques are used to control dental caries that have the ability to kill cariogenic bacteria. Recently, the addition of antibiotics to glass ionomers has been proposed to reduce the overall number of saliva bacteria. The aim of this study was to compare the antimicrobial effect and compressive strength of resin- modified glass ionomer (RMGI) containing diffe...

Physical properties of resin-modified glass-ionomers.

The physical properties and shear bond strength of two resin-modified glass-ionomers: RMGIs (FJL and VT) and as a control, a conventional glass-ionomer: CGI (FJ), were evaluated. Ninety percent of the setting shrinkage under dry conditions and nominal hygroscopic expansion in water during 360 h occurred within the first 24 h. The nominal hygroscopic expansion of CGI was 0.38% while the RMGIs de...
